Life’s a Beach

Life's a Beach

Five minutes with local business owner Arthur de Snoo

The Surfers Paradise Beach Café has been operating since 2011. What has made the café so appealing?

It has a great view, there is a large menu choice, and of course we have great staff.

What do you think customers love most about the Beach Café?

The perfect sea view!

What sort of crowds do you attract?

We offer a huge variety of meals: homemade pizza and pasta, fresh seafood, premium steaks and ribs, gourmet burgers and sandwiches. We have something on the menu for every one. We have families, retirees, groups of young friends and couples come in and dine.

Given you are an established local, how has Surfers Paradise changed, in your opinion, over the years?

The renovations and upgrades have had a very positive impact on the city. First there was the opening of Soul Boardwalk and the renovated foreshore, and then it continued with the completion of G:link, which brings everyone with ease into Surfers Paradise. The renovation of Cavill Mall, Orchid Avenue and The Mark building more recently has also been great to see, as the city keeps evolving. All this brings exciting new businesses that look better and fresher and push the older offerings out of the market.

What do you think makes Surfers Paradise so unique?

The combination of the beach, shopping, restaurants and bars, nightlife, entertainment venues and the consistent events that are put on throughout the year.

What do you personally enjoy most about Surfers Paradise?

I have been in the industry for 35 years and this is by far the best “office “ I have ever had. I go to work every day and overlook the sea and sand (and some days I spot a few whales in the distance!) all while sipping on fantastic coffee.

You have recently opened a second business. Can you tell us a little about that – what can customers expect from this second location?

Latitude 28 opened at the beginning of April in Cavill Mall. It has a typical, casual beach house interior with whitewashed walls and ceiling beams. We offer full table service and are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It’s Modern Australian cuisine – simple good food with clean flavors – without a lot of fuss.

Are there plans to expand businesses beyond two?

I have a passion for new projects and am continuously looking for new opportunities.

If you could recommend the perfect day out for a tourist visiting Surfers Paradise, what would it be?

First of all leave the car at home and take the G:link so you don’t have to worry about parking. Pick up a coffee at the Beach Café and go for a long stroll along the beach to get some fresh sea air. Follow that up with breakfast at the Beach Café Terrace with a nice fresh juice. Then pick up a surfboard or book surf lessons for the day. Pre-dinner drinks and dinner at Latitude 28 – Cavill Mall.  And finish with a few nightcaps at one of the many spots on Orchid Avenue or on the riverside.  For a young family, I would recommend visiting Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Timezone Surfers Paradise, or any of the other many entertainment venues that the kids would love!

Surfers Paradise Beach Café is located on The Esplanade, Surfers Paradise. Latitude 28 can be found at the Paradise Centre, Cavill Avenue Mall, Surfers Paradise.
